The most glamorous and prestigious event of the entertainment world, the Academy Awards, stepped into its eightieth year on February 24, 2008, in a gala event at the famed Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California. Popularly known as the Oscars, the Academy Awards are presented every year by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in recognition of excellence of professionals in the film industry. With actors, directors, scriptwriters, musicians and other professionals around the world vying for the coveted statuette, the Oscars have become one of the most eagerly awaited events of the present times.
This year, however, the show was in danger of being an absolute dampener. With striking Hollywood writers' associations calling for a boycott of the event and many actors joining in support, hardly anything could have been done to stop the event from losing its sheen.
