How to choose an unbreakable password

Despite the currentwave of identity theft and corporate security breaches, it's amazing how very few people treat their passwords with any level of seriousness. Most computers users, both at home and in the office, see passwords as a nuisance and therefore make them as easy to remember as possible. This can be a catastrophic mistake.

There are certain specific guidelines you need to follow to choose a safe and secure password. Use the following tips as a "how to" on making your password secure.

1. Your password must be alphanumeric. That simply means a mixture of numbers and letters such as xpf2778z. Why? When a hacker tries to break into a system, they often use what are called dictionary or brute force hacks. A dictionary hack is an application that simply uses standard words and word combinations in an attempt to guess your password. For example, many computer users use the word "password" as their actual password. A dictionary hack would crack that password in a few moments. Using alphanumeric passwords increases the number of possible password combinations by millions.

2. It should be 6 - 8 characters in length. The longer the password the harder it is for a hacking program to get around. If your password was abc then there are 6 possible password combinations. If your password was abc123 there are now over 720 password combinations possible. If your password was abc1234, there are now almost 6,000 possible combinations. Never, ever use a short password only comprised of letters.

3. Never use personal details in your password. People often use their home address, their age, husband or wives name, their social security number or their date of birth. These are incredibly easy to get access to by either a fellow employee or potential system hacker. Your password needs to be secure and hard to guess and personal details meet neither of these criteria.

4. Do not write your password down anywhere. Keeping a record of your password for somebody to find is as dangerous as keeping a copy of your ATM pin number in your wallet beside your ATM card. Create a memorable password that you will have no problem recalling. This is not as hard as it sounds and if you jot some password, ideas down you will quickly come up with some good ones. Obviously burn the piece of paper you jotted your ideas down on.

5. Do not use the same password for more than 90 days. Create several variants of the same password and recycle them every 60 - 90 days. This adds an extra layer of security to your data. By recycling your password frequently, you make your data 1000% more secure. You will notice that most large corporates force their employees to change their password every month for this exact reason.

Hopefully these tips will help you choose a password that is both safe and secure and that you will have some fun creating your new passwords too!

Space station's new robot ready for work

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - Astronauts aboard the International Space Station and visiting shuttle Endeavour colleagues delicately repositioned on Tuesday a new maintenance robot that will play a key role on the $100 billion outpost.
The Canadian-built robot, named Dextre, was assembled in orbit and outfitted with tools to help future spacewalking astronauts tackle maintenance and repairs on the complex.
Until it is needed, however, the 12-foot (3.7-meter) tall handyman, will perch on the outside of the U.S. Destiny laboratory.
"He looks like a gunfighter," Endeavour commander Dom Gorie radioed to Mission Control.
Before the move to the U.S. lab, the astronauts tucked Dextre's 11-foot (3.4-meter) long arms closer to its body and delicately flew it on the end of the station's crane to a mounting post on Destiny.
The pallet that held the robot's limbs was to be returned to the shuttle's cargo bay and taken back to Earth. Endeavour arrived at the station a week ago for a 12-day construction and repair mission.
"This has been a fantastic success already," flight director Kwatsi Alibaruho told reporters.
The mission has not been entirely trouble-free. Flight controllers were considering options for mounting two science experiments that stymied a spacewalking construction crew earlier in the day.

Microsoft Vista SP1

Microsoft has released the long-awaited first Windows Vista Service Pack, a wrap-up of incremental updates that apparently cripples certain vendors' software.
SP1 tackles reliability and performance, adds support for new hardware and wraps in earlier updates for compatibility with third party software. Microsoft claims more than 2,000 applications are now "certified for" or "work with" Windows Vista.
The only problem? A number of security products won't start up or run on updated desktops thanks to "compatibility problems". Among those affected are BitDefender AV or Internet Security, Fujitsu Shock Sensor and Zone Alarm Security Suite. Meanwhile, other products will experience "loss of functionality" once you've installed SP1, Microsoft said.
Microsoft has also introduced a number of security changes to Windows Vista, including updates to BitLocker drive encryption. And SP1 is "aligned" with Windows Server 2008, the two operating systems sharing common files in Internet Information Services and concurrent user support.
The first Windows Vista SP has long been seen by some analysts, at least, as the catalyst for broad uptake of the operating system among businesses.

Bars fight to be anointed Papa's local of choice

In life, Hemingway liked good sport. He certainly enjoyed a good drink. So the author would probably have enjoyed the row that has erupted between two bars in Key West, both of which are claiming to be his favourite drinking joint.

The Guardian reports that forty-three years after his death, the owners are at odds over which is the "original Sloppy Joe's," the reputed preferred watering hole of the Nobel Prize-winner during the 12 years he lived in Florida.
At stake is £5.4m in marketing and merchandising rights.

Chris Mullins, chief executive of Sloppy Joe's Bar, has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against the owners of the neighbouring Captain Tony's Saloon, demanding they cease describing their pub as the original. "We just want to protect our marque," Mr Mullins said. "Sloppy Joe's is world famous, Captain Tony's is not."

But locals say both are right - that the first Sloppy Joe's opened in a former morgue on the site now occupied by Captain Tony's in 1933, but that Hemingway, known to regulars as Papa, drank in both and even bankrolled landlord "Sloppy" Joe Russell's move to the new location in 1937.

The Caine Prize for African Writing, which is worth $15,000 (£9,000), is awarded to a short story published in English by an African writer whose work has reflected African sensibilities.
Chikwava's story, Seventh Street Alchemy, was praised by the judges' chairman, Alvaro Ribeiro, as "a triumph for the long tradition of Zimbabwean writing in the face of Zimbabwe's uncertain future."

He added that the story was marked out by "a very strong narrative in which Brian Chikwava of Zimbabwe claims the English language as his own."
The 32-year-old writer and musician was born in Bulawayo but grew up in Harare, where he performed regularly at the Book Cafe's poetry evenings and discussions. He studied at Bristol University and currently lives in south London.

Chikwava said he was very pleased but also surpr

Geoffrey Chaucer's sloppy scrivener unmasked after 600 years

After more than 600 years, his handwriting that gave him away. The identity of a medieval scribe - who until the last weekend was known to literary history only as Adam the scrivener - and whose carelessness was the cause of such vexation for Geoffrey Chaucer that the poet threatened to curse him with an outbreak of scabs, was discovered through some extraordinarily alert academic detective work.

The sloppy copyist of the words of the father of English literature was revealed to be one Adam Pinkhurst, son of a small Surrey landowner during the 14th century.
The revelation of his name and some of his background, announced by Cambridge University, has caused intense excitement and admiration among specialists in the subject. It indirectly helps to authenticate the two most authoritative texts of Chaucer's great work, the Canterbury Tales, the first long poem written in an approximation to modern English.

Penumbra, Overture Episode 1: a creepy, horrifying adventure

Penumbra: Overture is an intensely creepy horror adventure game developed by Got Game Entertainment and published by Frictional Games. The game has been designed to please horror game enthusiasts, who prefer subtlety in horror sequences to mindless action.

The opening montage reminds one of H.P.Lovecraft's masterpieces. The protagonist, Philip, gets a letter from his father all of a sudden. The odd fact is that his father presumably died some 30 years ago in an accident, when Philip was still in his infancy. The letter directs Philip to an abandoned safety-deposit box full of notebooks with mostly unreadable scribbling and a map of Northern Greenland with a specific spot highlighted. A thorough check by Philip reveals the spot as an abandoned mine. This is where Philip makes the decision to show up at the place and investigate. The beginning of his adventure puts him in a blizzard fighting for against the freezing cold.

First Encounter Assault Recon (F.E.A.R): A creepy bloodfest

F.E.A.R is an inherently creepy horror survival game developed by VU Games and published by Monolith. The game bundles frighteningly realistic gun battles with highly intelligent AI scripting for an altogether mind-blowing experience.

The beginning of the game is marked by a superb cinematic from the third person perspective, which informs the player about the background of the story. Paxton Fettel, a military commander stationed at a secret Government base, has gone insane. The actual problem, however, is more serious than that. Fettel has a medium sized army of cloned soldiers telepathically linked to him, under part of an experimental set-up. They have taken over and nearly destroyed the city in which the base is located. Now, Fettel and his pack of soldiers are searching the entire base and derelict city with a fine-toothed comb, supposedly in their hunt for something of great value. The Delta Force has been dispatched for damage control, but is facing heavy casualties

Battle through Hell, half-demon style

Gamers around the world greeted an exceptional game called Painkiller in 2004. The game featured a completely one-of-a-kind graphics engine, nicknamed Havoc. The engine featured specular lighting, volumetric mist effects, spectacular weapon effects and groundbreaking rag-doll physics. Taking advantage of that, players could even pick up a corpse of an enemy and juggle it in mid-air.

Four years have gone by since then, but the legacy of Painkiller is far from over. Dreamcatcher Interactive is back with its latest version of the concept that made the original game such a blast to play. The stand-alone expansion actually started out as a modification of the original title. The mod gained substantial popularity and finally captured the attention of Dreamcatcher, who decided to make it a full-fledged game.
